Equestrian TherapyOne of only two such therapeutic treatment programs in the entire Commonwealth, Verland's Equestrian Therapy Program provides physical, occupational and psychological therapies in a recreational setting to Verland individuals. Using the dynamic, three-dimensional movement of the horse as a basis for normal human movement input, treatment plans are designed by the consulting therapists as well as the certified therapeutic horseback riding instructor who spearheads the program. The opportunity for Verland folks to develop physically, emotionally and mentally through the discipline of horseback riding is significant. According to the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA), equestrian therapy is widely recognized as one of the most beneficial forms of recreational therapy that individuals with disabilities can receive. The primary concern of the Equestrian Therapy Program is always the safety of the student-rider. Under the equestrian therapy manager's scrutiny, the program's horses are screened for suitability and undergo intensive training. Volunteers who also receive expert training provide the necessary support to make the program possible.
During a typical session, the student-rider is encouraged to learn elementary care of the horse and basic riding skills. Equally important, they benefit from interaction with the instructor and horses, as well as the volunteers and other participants in the program. Located on Verland's main campus, The Equestrian Therapy Program is renowned for the services it provides to its participants as well as for being a center for public education regarding the enormous benefits of equestrian therapy. Initially made possible through a generous private gift, the stable complex was specifically designed for individuals with disabilities and encompasses four box stalls, a heated tack room, storage for hay and bedding and a climate controlled indoor riding arena. Lessons take place throughout the year.
