Runners and Others Invited to Support Services for Persons with Intellectual and Physical Disabilities

Pittsburgh -- Registration is now underway for participants to take part in the inaugural State-of-the-Heart 5k Race/Walk and 1-Mile Fun Relay benefiting Verland, which provides services for individuals with very challenging intellectual and physical conditions.

The events will take place at Hartwood Acres, beginning 9:00 a.m., Saturday, August 20, 2016.

Individuals or teams may run the 5k through the estate grounds or take part in the fun relay races, which can include riding inflatable ponies or a water bucket challenge.  Other family-friendly activities on-site include raffles, balloon and caricature artists, face painting, and chair massages.

Registration fees are $15 for the mile events or $25 for the 5k. Register online at:

Verland is a non-profit family of person-centered, community homes and services supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities, many of whom have multiple physical challenges. In the nearly 40 years since its founding, Verland has grown to be one of southwestern Pennsylvania’s largest providers of services for people with severe disabilities. Proceeds of the race benefit the housing, medical care and rehabilitation needs of 257 individuals served by Verland’s 50 residential care facilities in Allegheny, Beaver, Fayette, and Mercer Counties.
