Recreational Therapy at Verland’s Sewickley Campus
Recreational therapy is a service provided by a certified therapeutic recreation specialist (CTRS) also known as a Recreational therapist (RT).
At Verland, we believe that a life well-lived is defined by engagement, joy, and the freedom to explore one’s interests. Our Recreational Therapy program is a vital pillar of our holistic care model, specifically designed to enhance the quality of life for the individuals we serve. By integrating therapeutic play and leisure into daily routines, we ensure that every person on our campus has the opportunity to thrive physically, emotionally, and socially.
It is important to note that these specialized therapeutic services are provided directly by our on-site staff exclusively for the individuals who reside at our Verland Sewickley Campus. Our hands-on recreational programs are centralized within our Sewickley community to ensure a total-immersion support system that is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Rec therapy focuses on social, emotional, physical, & cognitive, domains when assessing the individual. The recreational therapist then sets individualized goals based on their needs using evidence-based interventions.
Rec therapy can help reduce stress/anxiety, provide opportunity for choice and independence, help build confidence, improve self-advocacy, provide leisure awareness, provide resources, increase community involvement, increase social integration, increase sense of purposefulness and accomplishment, and overall improve the person’s quality of life.
What Recreational Therapy Supports for Disabled Adults
Recreational Therapy at Verland is much more than “activities”; it is a clinical process designed to improve functional headers and promote independence. For the individuals we serve, who often face complex physical and intellectual challenges, these programs are tailored to meet the specific goals outlined in their Individualized Program Plan (IPP).
Our Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS) focus on:
- Cognitive Function: Using games and problem-solving activities to maintain and improve mental sharpness.
- Motor Skills: Enhancing coordination and physical strength through adaptive sports and movement-based play.
- Emotional Resilience: Reducing anxiety and promoting self-expression through creative arts and music.
- Social Inclusion: Building meaningful relationships with peers within our Sewickley campus community.
How Recreational Therapy is Delivered at Verland
Unlike traditional outpatient models, where therapy is a scheduled appointment at a distant clinic, Verland’s model is one of on-site continuity. Because our specialists are part of the permanent Sewickley campus team, therapy happens where the individuals live and learn.
Our recreational therapists work in lockstep with our Nursing, Physical Therapy, and Adult Training Facility (ATF) teams. This interdisciplinary approach ensures that if an individual is working on a specific mobility goal in physical therapy, those same movements are reinforced during a fun, afternoon gardening session or an adaptive bowling game. This seamless integration ensures that there are no gaps in care and that every activity serves a therapeutic purpose.
Supporting Physical & Social Engagement
Social isolation is a significant risk for adults with complex disabilities. At Verland, our recreational programming serves as a bridge to community and connection. From campus-wide seasonal celebrations to specialized hobby clubs, we create an environment where the individuals we serve are active participants in their own lives.
Our Sewickley campus offers a secure, managed environment where individuals can safely explore new interests. Whether it is sensory-based stimulation for those with profound physical challenges or community-based outings for those working on social integration, our recreational therapy is the “heartbeat” of our campus, ensuring that every day is filled with purpose and “loving care.”
