Recreational therapy is a service provided by a certified therapeutic recreation specialist (CTRS) also known as a Recreational therapist (RT).
Rec therapy focuses on social, emotional, physical, & cognitive, domains when assessing the individual. The recreational therapist then sets individualized goals based on their needs using evidence-based interventions.
Rec therapy can help reduce stress/anxiety, provide opportunity for choice and independence, help build confidence, improve self-advocacy, provide leisure awareness, provide resources, increase community involvement, increase social integration, increase sense of purposefulness and accomplishment, and overall improve the person’s quality of life.
Rec therapist’s take a holistic approach throughout the treatment process taking in account the person’s interests and providing therapy while engaging in what they enjoy! Therapy can take place both in a 1:1 setting with the therapist and or in a small group setting.
